A LONG-STANDING PRESENCE IN ASTI
The first Jews settled in Asti as early as 812. There was only a permanent group in town from the end of the 14th century as a result of emigrations and expulsions from central Europe. In the centuries to come, the Jews were repeatedly granted permission to open loan banks and settle in the city. The ghetto was established in 1723. With the Emancipation in 1848 many Jews took important roles in the life of the city and the country.
