AN HIDDEN SYNAGOGUE
In 1377 at Biella Piazzo a certain Giacomino Giudeo exercised the profession of innkeeper, not commonly exercised by Jews. A continuous presence in town was from 1577 with money-lenders and merchants. In 1723 was established by Savoy a tiny ghetto where a very little community lived. The synagogue was inside of one of the buildings, with anonymous façade and enter from a courtyard. When Biella in 19th century was a flourishing textile center, the Jews played a leading role in its industrial development.
