JEWS RIVALS OF GENOA’S MERCHANTS

Genoa’s own great mercantile ambition meant Jews were not allowed to reside in the city, since they were viewed as greatly feared rivals. For the whole of the 16th century the influence of the ecclesiastical authority, and the hostility from the great families of merchants and bankers resulted in the issuing of continuous deportation notices. But in 1648, when a free port was established, Jews were given permission to settle in the city.
