IN THE SHADOW OF THE DUCAL PALACE
The Jews enjoyed long period of serenity under the Dukes of Montefeltro until 1508 when the last Duke died and was succeeded by his nephew, Francesco Maria Della Rovere. The new Duke was also the nephew of Pope Julius II and the city came under the direct influence of the Church. In 1633 Jews were forced to live in the ghetto until 1797 when the doors were removed. After the French left the ghetto was sacked. The synagogue was built in 1633 and remodeled after the earthquake of 1848.
