{"id":1308,"date":"2018-06-24T10:15:28","date_gmt":"2018-06-24T08:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.visitjewishitaly.it\/?post_type=listing&#038;p=1308"},"modified":"2025-11-22T21:12:37","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T20:12:37","slug":"spanish-synagogue-4","status":"publish","type":"listing","link":"https:\/\/www.visitjewishitaly.it\/en\/listing\/spanish-synagogue-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish Synagogue of Rome (Tempio Spagnolo)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cl\">\n<p>A small Sephardic (Spanish) rite temple is in the basement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitjewishitaly.it\/en\/listing\/tempio-maggiore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tempio Maggiore<\/a>. This is a legacy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitjewishitaly.it\/en\/listing\/ghetto-of-rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ghetto<\/a>\u2019s Scole, where versions of this rite were observed. Originally located elsewhere, it was moved here in 1932, and in 1948 furnishings from the Cinque Scole were reassembled here.<\/p>\n<p>The hall has an elongated rectangular shape and the bi-focal layout of the Ghetto Scole: the <em>aron<\/em> and <em>tevah <\/em>face each other at the centre of opposite walls &#8211; in this case along the longer sides -, while the pews are arranged to face them.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>aron <\/em>in polychrome marble comes from Scola Nova; the original tympanum had to be removed because of the height of the ceiling, and at its sides were placed the seats belonging to the tripartite structure of the <em>aron <\/em>from Scola Catalana made between 1622 and 1628.
